Identity, the Internet and Google+
Wednesday, August 31, 2011 by cyberacoustics
I need to stop blogging about Google+. I know this, but it’s just so interesting to me to watch a gigantic company like Google roll out a product with so much fanfare and then continue to make gigantic blunders.
A New Kind of Pen

With Labor Day fast approaching, college campuses are starting to rumble with the stampede of students heading back. With each new freshman class one might think the challenge of making new friends might be the most difficult part of campus life, but a close second is figuring out which gadgets they’ll need to stay competitive.
Google+ Adds Games

Since Google+ launched in late June, the usage statistics have been a little underwhelming. People seem to want to talk about Google+ more than they actually want to use it. None of my friends seem to know quite what to do with it—it’s almost as if it’s just another version of Facebook.
oBaz: An Online Bazaar

We’re always looking for a discount or a way to haggle to get the best price. This works best if you’re dealing with your local merchants, of course. But what if you want the new GoPro camera? You can’t walk into Best Buy and ask for a discount, nor can try and barter on Amazon. But what if you could hook up with other people who want the same thing? This is where oBaz comes into play.
21st Century Rioting: A Look at the UK

By now, you’ve probably heard about the London riots—tonight will mark the fourth evening in a row that those upset by the death of Mark Duggan will take to the streets all over the city. It’s not just London, either—violence has broken out in Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool, and Bristol. And of course, social media and technology is playing a rather interesting role, on both sides.
Happy 30th Birthday to MTV

I remember reading a study a few years ago where researchers asked people to report how much alcohol they drank in a week, then compared the self-reported answers with the number of bottles the research subjects actually put outside their house. The amount that people actually drank vs. the amount they initially reported were incredibly different. We’re not a truth-telling people, especially when it comes to habits we may be ashamed of.
So, what about your browsing habits?

The time of owning your own music library is coming to an end. I've used Pandora and Rhapsody for years and the time has come to make a change. I heard about Spotify over a year ago, and was disappointed to learn that it was only available in Europe. But now that’s all changed. Like the Beatles coming to America, Spotify has finally arrived. I read a lot, and I’m a big fan of Russian author Gary Shteyngart, so when his new book “Super Sad True Love Story” came out, I was really excited to dive in. I blew through it in about two days, loving the dystopian picture of the future he presented.

I've been finding myself lately reading a lot about the history of food carts, and figuring out their origins. Of course, any faithful reader of this blog knows how I feel about food carts, but seeing how things used to be is always interesting.
